The intentions of the West Coast Swing Rising Star division:
Facilitate and support dancers interested in expanding their dance learning into choreographed routines.
Facilitate and support dancers interested in furthering their dance education by exploring performance, musicality, and choreography skills.
Give amateur and up-and-coming professionals a lower-pressure environment to build their routine performance competition skills.
Give amateur and up-and-coming professionals a low-pressure, warm, and nurturing environment to experience the joy and sense of accomplishment of building, rehearsing, and performing a routine.
For competitors to demonstrate understanding of and get coaching on their movement fundamentals, Swing content, and performance skills before entering the Classic and Showcase divisions.
To be a training ground to prepare competitors to transition to the NASDE divisions, and to give structure for the timing of that transition.
The role of the West Coast Swing Rising Star division: Couples are encouraged to keep their Swing content conservative in order to study and respect the dance style, while offering a little bit of leeway for exploration of personal style. Limited weight supports and breakaways ensure that the dancers are focused on dancing, not just tricks, and this will make the transition to Classic division easier. Couples who use lifts may be preparing for Showcase, where the rules are more relaxed. It will be easier to transition choreography from conservative to relaxed than to tighten it from relaxed to conservative.
